Bad Answers From The Internet Concerning Auto Insurance

I wasn’t sure what my next topic of discussion would be, so I decided to go online and search the most common questions asked about auto insurance.

So I did, and was shocked at all  all the bad information out there.

Seriously, the information contained in the Q & A articles I read was horrible….here are a few examples I found.

Q. What happens if I forget to make my monthly auto insurance payment?

And the wrong information the website provided was…

A. For your first offense your insurance company will mail you a warning notice. If it happens again they will issue a late charge or cancel your policy.

WRONG!!

This is a horrible answer to the question!! Not sure which field of daisies the writer lives in, but in my twenty years of work in the real auto insurance market, I can assure you the first notice you’ll get after you miss a payment will absolutely be a cancellation notice giving you about 8 days to make that payment. Oh hey, and they will also charge a late fee, and if the payment is not made you will not have insurance. “Warning Notice” No such thing!

Q. Can I change my auto insurance coverage whenever I want?

Are you ready for the website response?

A. Yes but you will be charged a cancellation fee. However if you wait till the end of your policy, then you won’t be charged.

WHAT? THIS DOESN’T EVEN MAKE SENSE!!

Again, horrible information! Terrible!

First, let’s answer the question, Yes, you can make changes to your policy anytime. If the change you make increases your premium your payments will go up. If the change you make reduces your premium your payments will go down.

But why would a company charge you a “cancellation” fee to make a “change” ? Ridiculous!

I shouldn’t take this one any farther but I can’t resist, “If you wait till the end of your policy you won’t be charged.” What!? That’s like saying if you wait till you’re dead to order that pizza, then you won’t have to pay for it! What good would a change do if the policy has ended !?

These are really bad answers.

Q. Will having a parking ticket on my driving history raise my auto insurance premium?

The bad answers to the questions continue.

A. If you only have one ticket on your driving history your rates will not be affected.

THERE’S SO MUCH WRONG WITH THIS

First, parking tickets do not show up on your driving history. They are not “moving violations.” Only moving violations affect your auto insurance premium.

However, I can tell you some companies don’t charge for your first moving violation and some do. It’s all up to the company. Each company handles things differently.

I could go on and on with this, but I’ll stop here. It’s really sad…..the vast majority of info I ran across is pathetic. It’s not written by knowledgeable insurance people.

With the internet full of articles written by “who knows who” it’s really a dangerous place to get information. Unless you are very discerning or have a great way to fact check.

You’ve heard it before and I’ll say it again, DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ONLINE (especially about auto insurance)

In a previous blog I mentioned that there is no substitute for having a knowledgeable, trustworthy, experienced, licensed insurance agent to give you real answers you can trust. I will always stand by that statement with how much the industry changes all the time. No major changes but small subtle changes that could have a great effect on your coverage, payouts, and rates.

You need a good agent who is in touch with the market and is involved with his or her clients.

Have you ever gone online to do an insurance quote for yourself ?

  • When you were finished did you feel confident that you picked all the correct coverage and limits that you need to protect yourself?
  • Do you know you’re getting the best rate?
  • Did you search for and find all the discounts you qualify for?
  • Do you know the rating of the insurance company you just got a quote from?
  • If you affected the policy and then needed assistance do you have someone who knows you that you can call for help?
  • Would you do business with an insurance company that has a “B” rating?
  • Do you know how and why insurance companies are rated, and why that is important to you?
  • Are you really getting the most bang for your insurance buck?!?
